Joanna Bourke, The Story of Pain: From Prayer to Painkillers (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2014). Reviews by Robert Boddice, Jennifer Crane, Gavin Francis, Antony Funnell, Brian Hurvitz, Simon Ings, James McConnachie, Arthur Holland Michel, Jonathan Rée, Jonathan Reinarz, Nicholas Shaespeare and Salley Vickers. Bourke’s subject matter is the way in which physical pain has been conceived of and managed from the 18th century to the present.
